2024 City of Fort Worth Academic Report

Yesterday my organization, Fort Worth Education Partnership, released our annual report on the academic performance of children in Fort Worth’s public schools. Unfortunately, the report shows that children in our city’s 12 ISDs and 14 public charter schools/networks did not improve from the 2022-2023 school year. The percentage of children meeting grade-level requirements actually decreased one point from 36% to 35%.

Reading levels also decreased one percentage point, from 44% to 43% of students reading on grade level. Math decreased by two percentage points, from 34% to 32%.

By City Council district, the results vary from the lowest achievement at 24% on grade level to the highest at 49%. Even at 49% achieved in the highest council district, we are still leaving more than half of our students behind.

There are more than 170,000 students in Fort Worth schools, and only a third of them achieve grade level standards. I can’t help but think about what it means for the future of our city when 65% of our future workforce and adult population is below grade level academically. Far too many of our kids will not have full access to a path to prosperity. I consider that to be a moral and civic crisis.   I have begun a blog for FWEP’s website, Education Matters, to discuss education and the importance of solving our literacy crisis here in Fort Worth.

At FWEP, we’ve also developed an online Tarrant County School Performance tool for the community and parents to discover how their child’s school is performing academically. All parents need to find out where their child stands academically to advocate for the best education their child can receive, and I hope all of us in Fort Worth will use this information and advocate for the education of all our community’s children.
